Note: Cebrero was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. The symbol of Saint James, the scalloped shell, became the normal badge representing pilgrims. Most construction of pilgrimage routes in Spain began by the end of the 10th century. The pass of El Cebrero was one of the most difficult passages of the pilgrimage, especially during winter weather. Even during summer, its climate can be cold, wet, windy, and foggy. Historic sites in Cebrero include a monastery and hospital, the Church of Santa MarĂa la Real, and the Pallazas (stone house-barn).
