Located on the Theban West Bank, building began around 1381 BCE. The site was excavated between 1971 and 1977 by David O'Connor and Barry Kemp. The site is made up of a number of residential and ceremonial structures, including a temple to Amun and at least four palaces. To the east of the complex was a vast artificial harbor and canal, the largest known in ancient Egypt; the earth removed in excavating the harbor was used to create a series of artificial hills along the southwestern shore.
