Note: Kordestān, translated as "land of the Kurds", as an ancient area originally included parts of Turkey, northern Iraq, and parts of Syria and Armenia. Today, the Îrānian province includes part of the Zargos Mountains and an eastern extension of Taurus. Small Kurdish dynasties arose after the Arab conquest, such as the Shaddadids, (951-1174), the Marwanids of Diyarbakir (990-1096); and the Hasanwayhids (959-1015). Kordestān however, has never experienced political unity. During World War I, nationalists attempted to gain independence with the backing of the American government under President Wilson's authority. Owing to several political setbacks this did not occur, and today Îrān is the only country that officially recognizes an area with the name Kordestân. |
