Note: Upper Saura Town was inhabited from ca. 1450 CE to 1710 by a Native American community described as the "Saura," "Sara," or "Cheraw." The Saura and their towns were referred to in Hernando de Soto's expedition journals from 1540. After attacks from members of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and white settlers, Upper Saura Town was abandoned in 1710; the remaining Saura joined the Catawba in southern North Carolina and northern South Carolina. |
