Note: Republic in Russia, extending from the southern Ural Mountains in the east to the Bugulma-Belebey Upland in the west. First inhabited by a nomadic Turkish people named the Bashkirs, it was controlled by Volga Bulgars in the 9th and 10th centuries. The khanate of the Mongol Golden Horde ruled the area from the 13th century until its overthrow by Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible of Russia in 1552. A Bashkir national government was formed in 1917, but was taken over by Bolsheviks in 1919 and made nominally an autonomous republic. It remained such under the USSR until 1991, after which it became a republic in Russia. The area is rich in minerals, oil, and natural gas, and has thriving industry and agriculture. The population comprises Russians, Tatars, Bashkirs, Chuvash, Mari, Ukrainians, and Mordvinians. |
