Note: The city of Ceske Budejovice lies south of Prague at the confluence of the Malse and Vltava Rivers. It was founded as a fortified town by the king of Bohemia in 1265, and still retains much of its medieval architecture, notably the arcaded town square. It is the town where Budweiser beer was first produced, and beer brewing is still a major industry. It has been known for the manufacture of pencils since 1790. It also produces porcelain, enamelware, furniture, tobacco, and food products. It serves as the capital of the region of Jihocesky. The 2003 estimated population was 98,600.
