Note: The town is located at the edge of the fertile Stara Zagora plain in central Bulgaria. The Thracian settlement of Beroea is the earliest known settlement on the site, followed by the Roman Augusta Trajana. Barbarians destroyed this in the fourth and fifth centuries. A thriving trade center in Byzantine times, it fell to the Turks in 1370, and declined. The Turks destroyed it in 1878, but it was rebuilt, and developed particularly rapidly from the end of the Second World War. Its main economic activities include brewing, canning, the manufacture of farm equipment and machine tools, and the production of cotton, chemicals, and cigarettes. The town features orchards and vineyards throughout. The 1989 population estimated was 158,00.
