The ancient Thracian city of Seuthopolis, the predecessor to Kazanlak, founded by the Thracian King Seuth III at the end of the fourth century, has been excavated and preserved. Some ruins of the city are submerged. The surrounding area is famous for its roses, the basis for a thriving perfume industry from the 17th century. Local industries in the modern town include the manufacture of musical instruments, furniture, textiles, and foodstuffs. The 1991 estimated population was 65,200.
