Note: One of two places with this name in North Yorkshire. Located 4.5 miles northwest of Richmond and 10 miles from Darlington. Noted for historic medieval and later homes. Ruins of Ravensworth Castle are nearby. Home of mathematician and astronomer William Lax (1761-1836) who produced "A Method of finding the latitude by means of two altitudes of the sun" in 1799.
