Note: Created in 1159 as a dependent cell of a Benedictine cathedral, Denny Abbey was used by monks for eleven years before it was transferred to and occupied by the Knights Templar. The Knights Templar erected a series of buildings to the north of the abbey, which may have been a hospital, refectory, and dormitory. In 1308, due to alleged heresy, the Templars were arrested, and Denny Abbey soon came to be property of the widow of the earl of Pembroke, who converted portions of the site into a house and convent for Franciscan nuns. After that, there were more transfers of ownership and structural changes.
