Note: Low Harperley was a prisoner of war camp built during World War II by Italian P.O.W.s in the early 1940s to house German pilots and soldiers. The site has an area of about seven hectare and includes barrack huts, a chapel, and a theater, some of which include wall paintings by German prisoners. The owner of the site, who died in 1999, had refused government grants to return the site to farmland or forestry; instead the site was used for storage.
