Note: Newstead is reputedly the oldest inhabited village in Scotland. The first masonic lodge in Scotland was here. Located in Newstead is the Roman fort of Trimontium, which lies on the east side of the modern village. The name 'Trimontium' comes from the triple peaks of nearby Eildon Hills. Excavations here revealed four superimposed forts, the earliest dating to ca. 80 CE; over time it became a highly important Roman military position.
