Note: Hedingham Castle of the de Veres family built on a hill in the late 11th century; the castle keep and a stone tower over 100 feet high still remain; de Veres family was prominent from the Middle Ages, not dying out until the 18th century; some people believe that Edward de Veres, 17th Earl, is the actual author of Shakespeare's works; much of the castle was dismantled by him in the 16th century to pay for his extravagances. |
