Note: Developed as important Roman & Saxon center along major road, Walting Street; market town; was associate memeber of Cinque Ports; great Cluniac Abbey was founded here in 1147 by King Stephen; he & his queen are buried there; Richard Arden, a 16th-cen. mayor, was murdered here by his wife & her lover; an early domestic drama entitled 'Arden of Faversham' is based on the story.
