Note: The region comprises the north flank of the Caucasus Mountains, glacial regions, and forest. It was inhabited as early as the 9th century CE. It was a Muscovite protectorate from 1557 and annexed to Russia from 1774-1827. The native Balkars were accused of German collaboration and deported in 1943, returning in 1956.
