Note: Tourist spot and fishing town at the foot of the cliffs at the far western end of Dorset; the town is mentioned as far back as the 8th century. Its curved stone jetty, The Cobb, is believed to have stood for over 1000 years. Lyme Regis is where the Duke of Monmouth landed in 1685 to begin his hopeless attempt of usurping the throne from his uncle James II. The town was also immortalized by Jane Austen in her novel 'Persuasion.' |
