Note: Was a large royal manor in the Middle Ages. Norman church of St. Michael-with-St.-Mary (ca. before 1152) was the Bishop of Carlisle's: it has an imposing nave with dog-toothed arches; Melbourne Hall's gardens were laid out ca. 1700 for Thomas Coke by London and Wise in the style of André le Nôtre, gardener to Louis XIV; only a chunk of wall remains of the 14th-century castle.
