Note: The town of Bad Homburg is located at the foot of the Taunus Mountains, just north of Frankfurt am Main in west-central Germany. The Romans knew of and used its mineral springs, though the town as such was first mentioned only in the 12th century. The town passed to the house of Hesse in 1521, and it became the independent city and margraviate of Hesse-Homburg in 1622. It became a famous and fashionable bathing and gambling resort in the 19th century and famed for the local Homburg hat, popularized by Edward, Prince of Wales in the 1890s.Starting from the end of World War I, the town expanded to include a growing residential district and industries such as the manufacture of machinery, leather goods, textiles, and baked goods. Historic architecture features the reconstructed Roman fortifications, the margrave's palace, 1680-85, and the casino, 1841. The 2004 estimated population was 53,200.
