Note: A Late Formative period site now located within the Distrito Federale; was founded ca. 1100 BCE. By 300 BCE, dominated the basin of Mexico; lost superiority to Teotihuacan ca. 50 BCE when the Xitle volcano erupted and Cuicuilco was buried deep in lava flows. The site is well known for a pyramid dating from the Late Preclassic period. The name 'Cuicuilco' is Nahuatl for "Place of Singing and Dancing." Originally excavated in 1922.
