Note: The city of Ludwigshafen is a river port on the west bank of the Rhine in southwestern Germany. It serves as a gateway to the important Rhine valley wine-growing region. It was founded in 1606 under the name Rheinschanze as a bridgehead opposite the city of Mannheim, and was developed later by the Bavarian king, Ludwig I, after whom it was renamed in 1843. It received its city charter in 1859. It was the home of poet and dramatist F Schiller after his exile from Stuttgart. It was badly damaged in World War II and in a disastrous explosion of chemical plants in 1948. Its industry features the production of steel, machinery, and chemicals. It serves as a railway hub and a center of commercial river traffic following the opening of its harbor. It has become a center for sports since the construction of the Southwest Stadium in 1951. The 2005 population was calculated at 162,514. |
