Note: Bīsitūn is located at the foot of the Zagros Mountains in the province of Kermanshah. It is also located on the Great Khorasan Road, or the Silk Road, which leads from Mesoptamia to eastern Îrān. On a cliff above the road is an ancient relief and monument to Darius I (reg 522-486) with a trilingual commemoration of his victory over Gaumata, the false Smerdis, and nine kings, that dates from 520-519 BCE. Other reliefs were added to the site after the fall of the Achaemenid Empire.
