Note: The town of Horsens is located at the head of Horsens Fjord in the county commune of Vejle in eastern Jutland, Denmark. It was founded as fortified town in the 11th or 12th century, and was also the site of several monasteries. It prospered as a market town in medieval times, receiving its first market charter in 1442. By the 18th century it was major commercial center. Its historic architecture includes the Romanesque Church of Our Savior, built in the late 13th century, a Franciscan monastery chapel, several 18th-century houses, and a 19th-century prison. It is famous as the birthplace of Vitus Bering who charted the Bering Strait in 1728. The modern town is a shipping, railway, commercial, and industrial center, manufacturing dairy foods, tobacco, textiles, and machinery. Its 2004 estimated population was 49,300.
