Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Oglala Lakota Nation. The reservation spans 1,700,000 acres in Bennett, Oglala Lakota, Jackson, and Sheridan Counties, South Dakota. Badlands National Park extends into the reservation lands and the Buffalo Gap National Grassland lies along the reservation's western border. The Lakota, from whom the Oglala Lakota Nation descend, migrated to present-day South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and Nebraska in the mid-18th century; by 1778, they eventually settled in the Black Hills, which became their spirital center. The Oglala Lakota Nation, however, did not receive a federal reservation until after the Red Cloud Wars of the 1860s. The Pine Ridge Reservation was specifically created in 1868 pursuant to the Treaty of Fort Laramie. |
