Note: Under Egyptian control, the ancient kingdom of Kush was created as the administrative region of southern Nubia, with its capital Napata, in the 15th century BCE. A distinct culture arose combining African elements from the south with Egyptian elements of the north. Trade and wealth flourished, due to Kush's proximity to the Nile, as well as their gold and emerald mines. In the 25th Dynasty (ca. 750-ca. 657 BCE), the Kushite kings were accepted as Egyptian pharoahs, once an independent Kushite monarchy was established that conquered Egypt ca. 715 BCE. Spoils brought back from Egypt prompted profound development on Kushite art, as well as building and development. However, by 591 BCE, Egypt had once again invaded and conquered Kush, and Napata returned to being a royal residence. Kush appears to have flourished until the late 4th century CE. While biblical and classic texts frequently refer to the population as "Ethiopians," modern sources point to a possible Kerma antecedent. |
