Note: The world's largest inland body of water, the Caspian Sea is a salt lake situated between Europe and Asia, lying east of the Caucasus Mountains, and west of the steppe of Central Asia. It is bordered by Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Russia. Studies have proven the lake was once connected, via the Mediterranean, to a world ocean. Approximately 850 species of animal exist in the Sea, many of them existing in the Sea exclusively. The major industry of the Caspian Sea region is oil and the hydroelectric power industry. The Sea is also known for its caviar. |
