Note: Ancient city of Mauritania, located ca. 20 km North of Mekès. It was an important center of Hellenistic culture from the 1st century BCE-1st century CE. From ca. 45 CE it was a Roman municipium. After 788, Volubilis was the capital of the Arab Idrisid dynasty. Extensive Roman ruins remain. |
