Note: Originally inhabited by Idrīsids, and later populated by Moorish Andalusian refugees in the 16th century. The town was captured by the Spanish in 1860 and 1913; returned to Morocco in 1956. It is the site of 36 mosques and sanctuaries. The economy is based on crafts and manufacturing. The Roman ruins of Tamuda are above the city. The medina of Tétouan was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. |
