Note: 19th century Muslim theocracy of western Africa. Fulani priest Uthman dan Fodio established an empire consisting of all the Hausa city states, Adamawa, Nupe and Yorubaland in the early 19th century. His son became the Sultan of Sokoto, still in existence until the 1890s, when the British invaded Nigeria.
