Note: Molenbeek-Saint-Jean originated as a village overlooking a millstream, or "molenbeek". It is noted as the site from which Louis XIV's army bombarded Brussels in 1695. In the early 21st ceentury, it is a residential and industrial suburb of Brussels. The Charleroi ship canal passes through it, forming part of its boundary with the main city of Brussels. |
