Note: Heidelberg Castle is located on a hill above the city of Heidelberg. A renaissance structure, it was devastated by French troops in the late 17th century and struck by lightning in 1764, but has been restored and well maintained. It towers some 330 feet above the city. In one of its cellars is the famous Heidelberg Tun, a gigantic wine cask having a capacity of 49,000 gallons. Millions of tourists visit it every year.
