Note: The city of Remscheid is situated on the Wupper river in the middle of a hilly, wooded area in the Rhine valley in the northwestern German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It was an estate given to the Knights of St. John by the count of Berg in the 11th century. It received its charter in 1808 and annexed two nearby towns in 1929, one of which, Lennep, was the birthplace of the discoverer of X-rays, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, for whom there is a museum. Just southeast of Remscheid on the Alt river is Germany's oldest dam for drinking water. The modern city produces tools, textiles, cutlery, and iron products. The population estimate for 2004 was 118,100. |
