Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, one of six Ojibwe members of the larger Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. The reservation spans 61,000 acres located in the Mille Lacs Lake region just north of Minneapolis and St. Paul in Mille Lacs, Crow Wing, Pine, and Aitkin Counties, Minnesota; it encompasses three distinct districs. Though the Band's Ojibwe ancestors began migrating to present-day Minnesota and Wisconsin about 500 years ago, and were settled throughout the area by the mid-1700s, the Mille Lacs Band did not receive a federal reservation until 1855. At this time, the Band was a signatory on a Treaty that set aside the 61,000-acre reservation, approximately 16,000 acres of which are now tribally owned. |
