Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Narragansett Indian Tribe. The reservation spans approximately 2,000 acres of mostly undeveloped land and ample water resources just east of the town of Charleston in Washington County, Rhode Island. Though the Narragansett Indian Tribe descends from the aboriginal people of the state of Rhode Island, having occupied the area for over 30,000 years, its tribal members faced extreme colonial violence and forced displacement during and after the Great Swamp Massacre in 1675. Consequently, surviving tribal members retreated into the southern portion of Rhode Island, which would later comprise their reservation land base. The current reservation was established through a federal court settlement in 1978; the tribe took control of this reservation in 1983. In an effort to uplift the epistemic authority of Indigenous knowledge systems and engage with Indigenous peoples' Right of Reply, ethical collaboration with the tribal chairperson's office and/or cultural center is highly encouraged for the most authoritative information about tribal reservations. |
