Note: Lower Saura Town was a settlement associated with a Native tribe called the "Sara," "Saura," or "Cheraw." The Saura had a second major town in Stokes County, NC, known as Upper Saura Town. Lower Saura Town was inhabited until 1710 after repeated attacks by members of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and white settlers; the remaining Saura migrated to Catawba towns in southern North Carolina and northern South Carolina.
