Note: Market town including East and West Retford, divided by the River Idle. Name refers to the clay red-tinged water of the river here. The area was first settled on the West side of the river, but the eastern bank became the larger prominent settlement and claims the name today. First chartered in 1246 when Henry III granted the right for a fair; right for a Saturday market was granted by Edward I in 1275. |
