Note: Navarrete was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. The symbol of Saint James, the scalloped shell, became the primary symbol representing pilgrims. Most construction of pilgrimage routes in Spain began by the end of the 10th century. The origins of Navarrete date back to the 11th century. Located in Navarrete is the Hospital and Inn of San Juan de Acre.
