Note: Grañón was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. The symbol of Saint James, the scalloped shell, became the primary symbol representing pilgrims. Most construction of pilgrimage routes in Spain began by the end of the 10th century. This site was a walled city with an important castle. Sections of the medieval walls are still visible from the surrounding street. Located in Grañón is the Monastery of San Juan and other 10th-century monuments.
