Note: Castildelgado was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. Various pilgrimage routes in the autonomous communities of Aragón, Navarre, and León correspond to old Roman roads built in the northern portion of the Iberian Peninsula. This site was first mentioned in 926 by the name of Villa de Pun;it was referred to by its present name in the 16th century. Its land-use patterns suggest it originally was a Roman settlement. Located in Castildelgado was the monastery of Santiago which was joined to the monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla and a hospice which is estimated to have been built by Alfonso VII next to the former Church of Nuestra Señora la Real del Campo.
