Hierarchy of Effigy Mounds (ancient site)  Effigy Mounds (ancient site)

Note: Mounds were built ca. 1100 to ca. 800 BCE by aboriginal Americans known as the "Effigy Mound Builders." The cluster of mounds at Devils Lake represents the largest remaining group of mounds by these people. The mounds seem to have had ceremonial significance, but apparently were not used for burials.
