Note: The largest tell in North Mesopotamia and Syria: 43 meters high and 800 x 600 meters in area. Tell Brak was a 'gateway city' that lay on a major trade road. It was the center of Akkadian imperial administration. Before the Akkadians, a large Hurrian city flourished there. It was first excavated in the 1930s. Important finds include the Eye Temple and the temples of Shamash and Shakkan. The latest occupation of Tell Brak was Roman. It is the site of an early mudbrick village.
