Note: Town was subject to frequent flooding, experiencing major floods in 19th and 20th centuries. It was inundated by the Tennessee Valley Authority's creation of Watauga Lake; residents and over 1,000 graves were relocated to a new town, which is now also called Butler. The original town site is now called "Old Butler," and is celebrated in an annual festival. |
