Note: Founded in the 4th or 5th century CE, Gäncä lies along the Gäncä River in western Azerbaijan. By the 13th century, it had become a trade center, but the city was destroyed by the Mongols in 1231. The Persians conquered the city in the early 17th century, where it became a khanate center, and in the early 19th century the Russians annexed the city and renamed it Yelizavetpol, and later Kirovabad. Gäncä lies in a rich farming area, and the city produces textiles and carpets as well. |
