Note: Located near confluence of Illinois, Mississipi, & Missouri rivers; Cahokia & Tamaroas tribes gathered here in summer for councils; early missionaries record 90 Indian lodges on the site; settled by French missionaries in 1698; was major center of trade with Native Americans; many inhabitants fled after British won the French & Indian War of 1763; declined somewhat due to floods & move of county seat to Bellebille in 1814.
