Near the small modern village is the deserted site of the important Roman-British town of Calleva Atrebatum, a node of the Roman road system in Britain. The Roman town was noted for its dyeworks. The town was once surrounded by walls. Most of the antiquities recovered from the site are in the Reading Museum. Remains of the Roman roads can be seen. There is also a 4th-century church here.
