Note: Vendôme is a historic town and capital of an arrondissement in the département of Loir-et-Cher, in north-central France. Vendôme is situated on the Loir River, which divides and intersects the town. In the south there is a hill on which are ruins of the 11th-century castle of the counts of Vendôme. Vendôme was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. The symbol of Saint James, the scalloped shell, became the primary symbol representing pilgrims. French pilgrimage routes to Compostela tend to follow old Roman roads, many of which continued to be utilized as primary roads of communication during the Middle Ages. Vendôme became part of France in 1589 under Henry IV. The town was damaged during World War II, but then restored. It contains a diverse local industry which includes household appliances, computers, printing, control and measurement apparatus, and food processing. |
