Note: Nevers was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. The symbol of Saint James, the scalloped shell, became the primary symbol representing pilgrims. French pilgrimage routes to Compostela tend to follow old Roman roads, many of which continued to be utilized as primary roads of communication during the Middle Ages. Nevers was constantly controlled by various powerful European families in the Middle Ages; for example, it was acquired by the Gonzaga family of Mantua in 1538 and later, in 1659, Nevers was given to the Mancini family by Cardinal Mazarin. Located in Nevers is the 11th-century Romanesque Cathedral of Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte and many 13th-18th-century buildings.
