Note: Astorga was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. The symbol of Saint James, the scalloped shell, became the normal badge representing pilgrims. Various pilgrimage routes in the autonomous communities of Aragon, Navarre, and Castilla y León correspond to old Roman roads built in the northern portion of the Iberian Peninsula. Astorga was an ancient Roman military outpost; it was reconstructed by Ordoño I of Leon ca. 860. It was taken by the French in the Peninsular War of 1810 and then recaptured by Spanish forces in 1812. Historic sites in Astorga include a surviving Roman bridge, city walls, the Romanesque Cathedral of Santa María, the churches of San Julián and San Bartolomé, and the Hospital of San Esteban. |
