Note: The county of Laois in the province of Leinster in the Republic of Ireland includes the valleys of the upper Nore and upper Barrow Rivers, and most of the Slieve Bloom, a range of mountains. It measures some 664 square miles in area. It was annexed to the English crown under the reign of Edward VI, 1547-1553. It is characterized by small towns and villages dependent upon cattle raising, forestry, wool, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. The 2003 estimated population was 59,800. |
