Note: County Sligo lies in the province of Connacht in western Ireland. It measures some 693 square miles in area. Most of it consists of rough pasture, and its many small farms raise mainly sheep, poultry, and cattle. Invaded by Anglo-Normans in late 12th century, it came under the lordship of the Sligo O'Connor from 1333, and became the home of the O'Donnell and O'Dowd clans. Like all of Connacht Oliver Cromwell reserved it for Irish proprietors in 17th century. Besides livestock raising, its economic act ivies include textile production fishing. The 2003 estimated population was 58,600. |
