Note: Leitrim is a county in the province of Connacht in Ireland. It measures 589 square miles in area, comprised of farmland and rocky glacial drift. The county was part of the ancient kingdom of Bréifne, ruled by the O'Rourke clan. In 1559, Sir Brian O'Rourke hid 1,000 Spaniards from the English fleet, which led to his exile and eventual execution in 1591. The population suffered great poverty in the late 19th century. Through the 20th century its population has steadily declined. Cattle and sheep are raised on the mostly poor soil, and potatoes and oats are the main crops. The small towns have some textile, automotive part, and electronics industry. The 2003 estimated population is about 25,900. |
